Aisling Millar was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1982 and emmigrated to the United States in August 1994. This heritage is felt deeply in the themes, forms, and colors she uses in her work. The title of this piece, Oráiste agus Liath, is Gaelic, translating roughly to Orange and Grey. This vivid piece is comprised of seven feet of stainless steel resembling a glowing torch or chalice.

Millar is inspired by iconic images found throughout Ireland such as New Grange, the Book of Kells, the architecture of Christian churches, and the political art of Northern Ireland. By utilizing the quality of line and style of traditional interlace Knotwork coupled with modern materials and tools, Millar reintroduces centuries-old tradition to the present. While the works of the Neolithic and Christian eras have been created through subtractive stone carving, Millar chooses additive steel fabrication which allows her to echo ancient stone monuments while opening up the form to new techniques.

Public works, either the stones of the Neolithic period or the political murals of today, have a direct effect on the people living around them.  They inspire many myths and legends, provide spiritual contemplation, commemorate historic events, express complex feelings and beliefs, and define a sense of place.  Millar chooses to create outdoor sculpture so that her work may become part of a community environment and be experienced by all the people within its community.
